Line 5 misses its window: Enbridge now builds a 1,500-foot bypass, restart pushed to September 12
The September 6-8 return-to-service window closed without a restart. In its place, Enbridge's September 6 and 7 updates describe a construction project: a temporary bypass of approximately 1,500 feet around the release site, with service now anticipated September 12. The bypass will isolate the incident site from Line 5 operations, which means the strike zone itself will not carry product when oil flows again. It is the third restart target in three weeks.

Enbridge misses the September 6-8 restart window and is building an approximately 1,500-foot temporary bypass around the Line 5 release site; return to service is now anticipated September 12.1
AnalysisA bypass rather than a repair keeps the strike site an investigation scene while product moves around it; the reference outage for a single contractor-vehicle strike now runs at least 18 days.

The US military struck three Iranian oil tankers, including one near the Kharg Island export hub, after ballistic-missile launches toward US warships; Iran's IRGC said it attacked tankers and US-linked vessels in the Strait of Hormuz in response, per Al Jazeera and Bloomberg.2
AnalysisTankers are now targets on both sides of the exchange; war-risk premiums, Gulf routing and export reliability reprice with every strike, and roughly a fifth of global oil trade transits the strait under fire.

PHMSA's repair-criteria NPRM for gas transmission and hazardous liquid pipelines closes for comment today, the first major rewrite of the federal anomaly-response rules in nearly 20 years (FR Doc 2026-13805).3
AnalysisWhat operators file today shapes how defect response schedules, engineering models and ILI data are treated for the next two decades; PHMSA estimates roughly $390 million in operator savings if adopted.

Shell completed its acquisition of ARC Resources on September 2 at an enterprise value of approximately $16.5 billion, adding about 370,000 boe/d of Canadian liquids and gas and supporting a production CAGR of around 4 percent through 2030, per Shell.4
AnalysisOne of Canada's largest gas producers now sits inside a supermajor's balance sheet; its wells, gathering and processing move under Shell's integrity regime and its gas feeds the LNG Canada value chain Shell already anchors.

SKK Migas, Mubadala Energy (80 percent) and Harbour Energy (20 percent) set September 2026 as the FID target for the Tangkulo deepwater gas field offshore North Sumatra, slipped from June over the participating-interest transfer; the development targets about 300 MMcf/d plus 7,000 b/d of condensate from 2028, per Dunia Energi.5
AnalysisA sanction this month would put the first of the Andaman deepwater discoveries, more than 2 Tcf in place, on a development clock and test whether Indonesia can convert its 2024 exploration wins into capital.

Inside the repair-criteria NPRM closing today: PHMSA proposes letting operators use validated engineering assessments, improved material-property records and advanced inline-inspection data in place of fixed defect-size repair triggers, per the Federal Register and Pipeline & Gas Journal.6
AnalysisAnomaly response would move from calendar-and-caliper rules toward model-based disposition, raising the compliance value of ILI data quality and materials documentation across every regulated line.
