The mine question arrives in Hormuz: Iran says the El Gaia struck naval mines, CENTCOM says Iran struck the tanker again

Iran's IRGC Navy said Monday that a supertanker it identified as the El Gaia exploded and burned after hitting naval mines on what it called an unauthorized route south of the Strait of Hormuz, per the IRGC statement carried by Press TV and reported by IranWire. US Central Command rejected the account the same day, saying the vessel did not strike a mine and was hit again over the weekend after being damaged in an Iranian attack in late August, per Israel National News reporting of the CENTCOM statement. It is the second time in two weeks the IRGC has attributed a tanker casualty to mines in the strait's southern approaches; Washington has disputed both claims.

  1. 01

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Monday that Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline is expected to resume operations soon, with more clarity on timing as technical teams complete damage assessments, per Anadolu Agency. CNN reported energy analysts expect Saudi Arabia to resume partial flows through the line while repairs proceed; the five-to-six-week full-repair estimate from CNN's industry sources stands, and neither Aramco nor the Saudi energy ministry has published an assessment or timeline.1

    Analysis

A restart signal from Washington is diplomacy, not scheduling; the first operator-published datum will move planning more than any official's 'soon'. Partial flows during repair would slow the Yanbu storage drawdown clock, so Red Sea terminal loadings remain the series to watch.

  2. 02

Commodity vessel transits through the Strait of Hormuz fell to single digits per day at the weekend, well below the 10-day average of 14, per Reuters reporting carried by BOE Report. The decline preceded the El Gaia fire and the postponement of the Salalah corridor talks, and it follows the IRGC's announced attacks this month on tankers using routes outside Iran's declared corridors.2

    Analysis

Fourteen daily transits was already a rationed number; single digits means the strait is functionally closed to all but accepted-risk traffic. For supply models, treat Hormuz throughput as a policy variable set in Tehran rather than a shipping market outcome.

ADNOC's international investment arm XRG completed its acquisition of an equity stake in Southern Gas Corridor CJSC from Azerbaijan's Ministry of Economy on September 15, following regulatory approvals, per World Pipelines. SGC holds interests in the Shah Deniz gas and condensate field, the South Caucasus Pipeline, TANAP and TAP, a 3500 km network moving up to 26 billion m3/y from the Caspian through Georgia and Türkiye to Southern Europe; XRG pairs the stake with upstream positions in Azerbaijan's Absheron field and Turkmenistan's offshore Block I.3

    Analysis

Gulf capital now sits inside Europe's principal non-Russian gas artery, and the supply graph gains an owner: ADNOC influence runs from Caspian wellhead to Adriatic landfall. The undisclosed stake size is the gap to close; TAP expansion-capacity decisions are where the new shareholder's intent will first show.

  2. 04

Venture Global and China Gas Holdings signed a new 20-year sales and purchase agreement for 0.5 million tpy of US LNG beginning in 2030, taking China Gas's long-term offtake from Venture Global's portfolio to 2.5 million tpy across 20-year SPAs, per the companies' September 14 release. LNG Prime notes the deal follows China's halt of US LNG imports in March 2025 after tariffs on US energy products took effect.4

    Analysis

A Chinese buyer signing a fresh 20-year US commitment is the clearest demand-side evidence yet that the tariff-era freeze is thawing, and it thickens the offtake stack behind Venture Global's expansion capital at Plaquemines and CP2. Watch whether other Chinese buyers follow before year end.

Black & Veatch launched BVInfraIQ.LNG at Gastech in Bangkok on September 14, an AI toolset that converts FLNG operational data into prioritized operating recommendations, as part of a new Advanced Liquefaction Architecture the company says can lift LNG production by up to 15 percent on its PRICO single mixed-refrigerant systems, per World Pipelines. The company states PRICO technology runs on more than half of FLNG facilities operating or under construction worldwide.5

    Analysis

The performance figures are vendor claims without a named reference facility, but when the dominant FLNG liquefaction licensor moves optimization into an AI product layer, the achievable-throughput baseline for every PRICO hull shifts; ask which operating vessel produced the 15 percent before crediting it.
