IEA Coordinated Emergency Stock Release (2026)

Emergency release of government-held crude and product stocks coordinated through the International Energy Agency after the Iran war began. A 400 million barrel release was agreed in March 2026; on October 2, 2026 the G7 agreed up to 100 million barrels of crude and diesel over four months, counted partly against commitments already met.

Record verified against agent research 2026-10-22 as of 2026-10-17 (Reuters via WHTC; OilPrice.com; Reuters via BOE Report). Tracked since 2026-10.

  1. US Energy Department seeks bids to exchange up to 17 million barrels of SPR crude

The department issued a request for proposals for an SPR exchange under the 172 million barrel US share of the March arrangement. A June loan offer with paybacks of up to 24 percent had drawn only about 500,000 barrels.

  2. IEA board commits over 20 million barrels of diesel and speeds the remaining March release

The governing board agreed to release over 20 million barrels of diesel as soon as possible and to speed the roughly 100 million barrels still owed of March's action, about 330 million having been released. Members had discussed as much as 50 million barrels of diesel, and analysts said the volume accelerates existing commitments.

  3. IEA agrees to speed up the March release and prioritise diesel

The IEA agreed to accelerate completion of the March 400 million barrel release, about 100 million barrels of which had not reached the market, and to prioritise diesel without saying how much. JPMorgan analysts said the 100 million barrels is not new intervention of that size, and members were to review the plans at a board meeting the following week.

  4. G7 agrees up to 100 million barrels of crude and diesel over four months

G7 leaders agreed a release through the IEA of up to 100 million barrels starting immediately, with a substantial share of diesel within 20 days, after the US warned of a possible diesel export ban. The statement counts commitments already fulfilled, so the share that is new beyond the March 400 million barrel pact is unclear.
