The bypass runs back through the strait: Aramco shuttles crude across Hormuz for transfer off Sohar as Riyadh targets half the pipeline within days
Saudi Aramco is sustaining crude deliveries to Asia through ship-to-ship transfers off Sohar in the Gulf of Oman: shuttle vessels load at Gulf terminals, cross the Strait of Hormuz, and hand cargoes to long-haul tankers that never enter the strait, per energynews.pro citing loading data attributed to Kpler and Energy Aspects. Bloomberg reported Wednesday that Saudi Arabia is seeking to return about half of the East-West pipeline's capacity within days by bypassing the damaged section. Neither Aramco nor the Saudi energy ministry has published a damage assessment or timeline.

ExxonMobil's 264,000 bpd Joliet, Illinois refinery is being stabilized after a plant-wide power outage on Sunday, September 13 shut the site and sent it to its safety flare; power went out around 3:30 p.m. CT and was restored by about 7:00 p.m., per NBC Chicago. Reuters, via Shaw Local, reported the company expects a return to normal service by the end of this week, with the cause of the outage under investigation; The Deep Dive noted the plant represents roughly 6 percent of Midwest refining capacity and that BP's Whiting refinery also slowed operations in the same period.1
AnalysisA total power loss at 6 percent of Midwest refining capacity is a grid-dependency datum before it is a refinery fault, and it lands on a products market already at record diesel prices. Watch whether the end-of-week restart holds and whether ExxonMobil or the utility names the interconnection failure.

Libya's National Oil Corporation links the closure of the main valve on the pipeline linking the Hamada field to Zawiya, which it called illegal, to a sudden pressure surge and backflow at the Tahara field and the complete shutdown of three installations: Hamada (NC8), Tahara (NC4) and the NC5 station, per NOC's September 15 statement reported by energynews.pro. The closure is attributed to members of the Petroleum Facilities Guard's southwest branch pressing wage and oversight demands; NOC warned it could declare force majeure if the valve remains shut, and published no estimate of lost production.2
AnalysisA guard force closing a mainline valve against procedure is an integrity event as much as a labor action: uncontrolled valve closures produce exactly the pressure transients that damage pipe and rotating equipment. Watch for a force majeure declaration and for other PFG branches copying the tactic.

Petronas, PTTEP JDA and the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Authority formalised a 35-year production-sharing contract and natural gas sales agreement in the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Development Area at Gastech in Bangkok, one of a set of agreements organisers valued at a combined estimated $40 billion announced or advanced across the event's first three days, per the dmg events release of September 16. Contracted volumes and the development plan were not disclosed.3
AnalysisA 35-year PSC binds two national gas systems to one shared basin into the 2060s, the longest-dated supply relationship signed in Southeast Asia this year. The signature is the relationship; the undisclosed volumes and development plan are what will convert it into supply, so watch for the field-level commitments.

Enbridge opened a non-binding open season on September 10 for West Texas Express, a proposed intrastate gas pipeline from the Waha hub to El Paso with branches toward Hudspeth County and delivery points near the US-Mexico border, offering up to 2,000,000 Dth/d of designed firm capacity and targeting a fourth-quarter 2029 in-service, per the consultation notice reported by energynews.pro on September 15. The consultation closes September 25; the line would sit primarily under Railroad Commission of Texas jurisdiction, with cross-border deliveries needing separate federal approvals.4
AnalysisPermian associated gas keeps outgrowing takeaway, and a 2 Bcf/d-scale westward line would route Waha molecules toward El Paso demand and Mexican exports instead of the Gulf Coast, a supply-graph change if it holds. Open-season interest is non-binding and cheap; precedent agreements are the signal that separates a project from a market test.

At Gastech's session on methane abatement across gas supply chains, Nigeria LNG chief executive Adeleye Falade argued the industry should treat every tonne of methane as a lost opportunity in volume and value terms, saying that once emissions can be measured the business case for abatement becomes clear, per the dmg events release of September 16. The session framed stronger measurement, shared standards and technology deployment as conditions for the long-term competitiveness of natural gas rather than compliance items.5
AnalysisWhen the chief executive of a major LNG seller prices methane as lost revenue, the buyer for measurement technology shifts from the sustainability office to the commercial desk, and with EU methane-intensity documentation phasing in for imports, measured and unmeasured cargoes will not price the same. The recurring unattributed plumes on the Permian gathering corridor Beacon tracks are the test case: unmeasured value leaving the system.
