Borr Drilling jack-up Prospector 5 sinks during preload on BW Energy's Dussafu licence off Gabon; one reported dead, four missing

·7 sources

The Borr Drilling jack-up Prospector 5 lost stability and sank at about 20:37 local time on October 24 while jacking ahead of a drilling campaign on BW Energy's Dussafu Marin licence off Mayumba, Gabon, with 115 people on board; 110 are accounted for, Reuters reports one found dead, and Gabon's government still lists five missing. Borr's preliminary account is a punch-through during preload, which is not a finding: Gabon's petroleum ministry has ordered a technical investigation, and BW Energy says its MaBoMo platform is shut with no damage or discharge reported.

Where it stands

Search and rescue is continuing for the people not yet found from the Prospector 5, a jack-up owned and operated by Borr Drilling that sank on the Dussafu Marin licence offshore Gabon late on October 24 2 3. Of 115 people on board, 110 are accounted for 2. Reuters reports that an Indian national among the five first listed as unaccounted for was found dead and that the four still missing are three Gabonese nationals and one other expatriate; Gabon's authorities had not confirmed the death and continued to list five people missing 1 4.

No cause has been established. Borr says preliminary information points to a punch-through during preload, followed by loss of stability and sinking; that is the contractor's early account, not an investigation finding 3. Gabon's Ministry of Petroleum and Gas has ordered a technical investigation 1. The status is investigation ongoing.

What happened

BW Energy, which operates the licence, says the rig lost stability and sank at 20:37 local time on Saturday, October 24, during jacking operations ahead of a planned drilling campaign 2. The ministry put the time at about 21:40 local time, a discrepancy the reports have not reconciled 1 4. The rig had not begun drilling and was contracted to support BW Energy's drilling offshore Gabon 1. Gabon Media Time, citing the companies, reports that the rig was in preparatory operations to approach BW Energy's MaBoMo production platform off Mayumba in Nyanga province 5.

Borr activated its onshore emergency response team and is working with local authorities and BW Energy, it said, and chief executive Bruno Morand said the company's immediate priority is the search and the welfare of personnel 3. The ministry activated a crisis unit with the navy, Gabon Oil, BW Energy and Borr, and ordered the navy to reinforce the search at sea 1 4.

BW Energy says the MaBoMo facility is shut "in accordance with standard procedure during ongoing drilling preparations," and that no damage to the facility or related equipment and no accidental discharge of harmful substances from it have been reported 2. The ministry also reported no observed discharge and said pollution-response resources remain deployed to protect the coast and Mayumba National Park, per Reuters 1. BW Energy holds 73.5 percent of the licence, Panoro Energy 17.5 percent and the Gabon Oil Company 9 percent 6.

The licence was heading into a busy drilling period. On October 16 BW Energy reported that appraisal wells 10P1 and 10P2 found oil and set out a MaBoMo Phase 2 plan of four new production wells plus one at the 10P2 location, each expected to start near 5,000 b/d gross, with Phase 2 peaking at up to 20,000 b/d gross 6. In May the company moved MaBoMo Phase 2 first oil to the first quarter of 2027 and said its Dussafu production licence had been extended to 2048 7. No source has yet tied the Prospector 5 to a specific well in that program.

Analysis

What it means

This is a people-first event, and the count of the missing is the only number that matters today. For everyone else working jack-ups, the question is what the investigation finds about the seabed and the preload, and Borr's early punch-through account is a hypothesis until Gabon's technical investigation says otherwise.

If the investigation confirms it, the questions for any operator or contractor moving a jack-up onto a new location are familiar ones: how recent and how site-specific the geotechnical survey was, whether it covered the spudcan footprint near an existing platform, what the predicted leg penetration curve showed, and whether preload was staged with hold points, air gap and crew limits set for a sudden leg run. Rig-move procedures, preload manning and abandonment drills are worth a check now, not after the report.

For BW Energy, the near-term exposure is schedule and rig availability. The company has a Phase 2 well program and a Bourdon development in 2028 that need jack-up time, and a lost rig plus a state investigation is unlikely to leave that timetable untouched. Watch for BW Energy to say how long MaBoMo stays shut and whether the drilling campaign is deferred, and for Borr to disclose the rig's contract and insurance position.

Next markers: the outcome of the search; any statement from Gabon's ministry on the scope and timing of the technical investigation; and the companies' next market disclosures.
